Snail Mucin: Setting The Pace For Ultimate Hydration

When you reside in the desert, parched skin is a residential hazard. The battle against dry skin is tough and unfair. To put it mildly — I no likey dry skin. Even as a resident of Hawaii, where the humidity is high, the primary focus of my skin care routine was hydration. In my opinion, everyone’s primary skin care focus should be hydration — young, old, dry skin, oily skin, — everyone. But moving to Nevada up the ante. Luckily, I discovered the wonderful benefits of snail mucin.

Shortly after arriving in Las Vegas, I immediately became a regular at Sephora (ok, I’ve always been a regular at Sephora) trying to develop a new routine to win the war against desert air. Most of the products I used in Hawaii have been replaced with products that offer more hydration or aid in the hydration process. I also added a few new products like a water sleeping mask and a hydrating mist. But, one product has become the X factor in my tactical plan: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. Snail mucin is basically snail slime. Yeah, you read that right. As it turns out, the smiley stuff that snails leave behind is packed with nutrients like hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein, proteoglycans, and antimicrobial and copper peptides. Snail mucin is commonly used in beauty products and proven to be beneficial for the skin. The COSRX essence is 96% snail secretion filtrate. I guess that’s almost as good as having an actual snail glide across your face.

Most often, essences comes in liquid form. Some  are mists that you spray directly on your skin. This COSRX essence is different. The formula is thick and gel-like, but it absorbs quickly.  And a little goes a long way which makes the 3.38 oz bottle a great value. I use the essence right after washing and toning and before applying my serum. Since I started incorporating the essence in my routine, I noticed that my skin no longer feels tight or dry after being outside for a while.  It’s as if the snail mucin creates a moisture barrier that keeps your skin feeling supple a day long. And after using the essence for six weeks, I do see a difference in my skin’s overall texture.
